Shop with a difference in medieval Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Shop in Shrewsbury - one of the few places where the independent shops still outnumber the 'big chains'.
Shopping in Shrewsbury is anything but predictable. A stroll along the cobbled streets of the Wyle Cop can turn up anything from a kimono, to a mandolin or a rare first edition. There are antique shops, retro shops, gourmet food and wine shops. And there are plenty more shops tucked away in the 'shuts and passages' (those crooked medieval alleyways that criss-cross the town centre) that feel like they're from another time.
Many Shrewsbury shops have been in the same hands, on the same site, for generations like Tanner's Wines on Wyle Cop with its atmospheric cellars. Even the shopping centres have more character than most. The Parade, with its grand neo-classical outside and quaint Victorian corridors on the inside has 30 independent shops - from tailors and cobblers, to artists and jewellers (and some of the best views of Shrewsbury).
