FAQs

  • Bedfordshire is a county in the East of England, situated in the southern Midlands. About 45 minutes from London by train, it is bordered by Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, and Northamptonshire, making it an ideal hub to explore this scenic region. Its relatively central location means that it is easy to reach from most parts of the country by both car and public transportation.
The county is home to a mix of historic market towns, rolling countryside, and popular tourist destinations like the ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Woburn Safari Park, Wrest Park, and the Dunstable Downs and Whipsnade Estate.

Find out more about how to plan your visit on the Experience Bedfordshire site.

  • Knebworth House, Gardens & Park is a historic home located in Hertfordshire, just outside the town of Stevenage. Knebworth has been home to the Lytton family since the 15th century, and was later remodelled in a Tudor-Gothic style. It sits within a pristine parkland estate with formal gardens, woodlands, and family friendly attractions. Today, it is one of the premier British venues for rock concerts, with acts like Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Oasis having played here. Visitors arriving by car can access Knebworth via the Junction 7 roundabout of the A1(M), and the nearest rail station is Stevenage where taxi and bus services are available.

Find out how to plan your visit on the Knebworth House Directions page.

  • Whipsnade Zoo is the largest Zoo in the United Kingdom, located near the town of Dunstable in Bedfordshire. The site covers around 600 acres of parkland within the Chiltern Hills, providing spacious habitats for wildlife to roam, with specific zones dedicated to animals from Africa, Asia, Europe, and other unique regions. The different habitats found at Whipsnade include The Aquarium, Butterfly House, Centre for Elephant Care, Giraffe Heights, Hullabazoo Farm, In with the Lemurs, Monkey Forest, Penguins, and Rhinos of Nepal. Because of its size, visitors can travel around the zoo on foot, by shuttle train, or even drive between some enclosures.

Find out more about the different animal encounters on the Whipsnade Zoo site.

  • Woburn Abbey, the historic home of the Duke of Bedford, has traditionally opened to visitors on selected dates during the year alongside the surrounding estate. The abbey itself remains closed for major refurbishments, and while there are plans to welcome visitors again once the restoration work is completed, no specific reopening date has been announced. Although the Abbey and its immediate surroundings may be closed, the wider estate remains open and offers a number of attractions for visitors to enjoy.

Similarly, surrounding attractions including Woburn Safari Park and Woburn Golf Club remain open. Before planning a visit in 2026 be sure to check the progress of renovations for specific updates on the Woburn Abbey and Gardens page.
