Pay homage to the written word in South Shields
South Shields, South Tyneside
Step inside The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, a state-of-the-art venue in South Shields.
The Word is a striking, landmark building at the heart of South Shields, which has proved to be hugely popular since it opened in 2016.
At its core The Word celebrates the written word in all its forms through a rolling programme of exhibitions, events and activities.
Exhibitions in the past have featured subjects ranging from Sir Ridley Scott to lost dialects, monsters to code-breaking. Make sure you check out The Word's website for all the latest details!
As well as a fantastic state-of-the-art library, it's also home to the immersive StoryWorld, a dedicated gaming zone, a FabLab with 3d printers and lots more.
It's a beautiful building and worth a visit just for the architecture alone. There's great views over the River Tyne from the rooftop terrace or the many vantage points inside the venue. The Word is also the place to go to find out more about the area, as it is home to South Tyneside's Visitor Information Centre.
Entry to The Word is free, but there may be a small charge for some one-off events.
