Pay homage to the written word in South Shields

Step inside The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, a new state-of-the-art venue brimming with exciting new experiences, activities and facilities for people of all ages to enjoy.

The striking, landmark building offers a range of exhibitions and events that pay homage to the written word in all its different forms. It is also home to North East writers, a FabLab with 3D printers, a children’s immersive storytelling area and lots more. The area’s Visitor Information Centre is also located here.

The first free major exhibition, which runs until 2 May, focuses on one of the area’s most famous sons, world-famous film director Sir Ridley Scott. Artefacts from his movies feature alongside purpose-built replicas and costumes, movie clips and family friendly interactive activities to celebrate his hugely successful career.
