Hop on the Seaton Tramway

  • Sightseeing
  • Suggested time at location: 30 minutes

Venture into the Devonshire countryside on the Seaton Tramway, which runs from its namesake seaside town to Colyton – a 30-minute ride through the countryside on a vintage tram trolley. It’s all open-air, with sweeping views of wildlife-filled wetlands and rolling meadows: just the ticket to blow away the cobwebs after your journey, and one of the top things to do in South Devon.

Scones with strawberry jam for a traditional English tea.

Looking for foodie things to do in South Devon? At Colyton, the Tramstop Café is the kind of place where scones are lavished with cream and jam, and tea is served in pots for sharing – so pull up a seat for afternoon tea. It’s located right beside the tramline, with a flower-filled terrace and scenic short walks from its door. If you fancy exploring, check out its takeaway menu for a picnic overlooking the Axe Valley.

Walk with the wildlife

  • Sightseeing
  • Suggested time at location: 2 hours
  • Low budget

The tramway passes through two nature reserves, so on your return journey hop off at Seaton Wetlands – to spy kingfishers and sandpipers in the reeds, and ospreys swooping for fish. Otters can be seen here too, and the pathways are filled with butterflies in summer. Spend an hour or two strolling the boardwalks and spotting the wildlife (with a little help from the info boards), before catching the tram back to Seaton.

This evening, tuck into a hyper-local supper at the hotel: chances are, the fruit and veg will have been picked just a few hours ago, served alongside hand-dived Lyme Bay scallops, Devonshire sirloin steak and venison from a nearby farm.

Option 1: Follow in Agatha Christie's footsteps

  • Sightseeing

Described by Agatha Christie as ‘the loveliest place in the world’, Greenway was her family’s holiday home in the late 1930s – and now gives a fascinating insight into the great crime novelist’s roots. For bookworms, this is one of the top things to do in South Devon.
