Venture off the beaten track to experience a taste of the real Yorkshire in Barnsley, an area of diverse and picturesque countryside. There is no better way to explore these extraordinary landscapes than on the network of footpaths, cycle ways and horse-riding trails; trails range from the gentle to the challenging, so take your pick.

Ancient packhorse routes and modern cycle paths, peaceful rural footpaths and the popular Trans Pennine Trail (a multi-use trail that crosses the North of England) link users to fascinating heritage sites, historic villages and amazing scenery; visit Elsecar Village, Wentworth Castle Gardens and Worsbrough Mill Museum. The 250-acre wetland at RSPB Old Moor nature reserve is one of a chain of wildlife havens to discover, along with woodlands, local nature reserves, parks and moorland across the area. 

Barnsley is in Northern England, 2 hours 35 minutes from London by train.
