Discover 2,000 years of history at Durham Cathedral

Durham City, Durham

Open Treasure is Durham Cathedral’s new world-class visitor experience, located in the most intact surviving set of medieval monastic buildings in the UK.

Open Treasure gives visitors access to previously hidden spaces within Durham Cathedral's magnificent Claustral buildings, showcasing the Cathedral's collections so that they can be discovered and enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Your journey through 2,000 years of history begins in the magnificent fourteenth-century Monks’ Dormitory, with interactive exhibits and activities to evoke the sights, sounds and smells of life in a medieval monastery.

This summer also presents a unique opportunity to see all three issues of Durham Cathedral's Magna Cartas, one of the most influential texts in British history and a document which still exerts influence today. The exhibition will display the only surviving copy of the 1216 issue, and further issues from 1225 and 1300. These will be displayed alongside their associated Forest Charters, from 1217, 1225 and 1300.
