August events: Oxford Foodies Festival

Given the obvious theme of this festival, you might want to skip breakfast before you arrive. One of the biggest of its kind in the UK, this is a three-day event where the famished can eat, drink, learn and discuss everything to do with food, glorious food.

Demonstrations in the Chefs Theatre will show you how to recreate posh dishes in your own home, but if you just want to skip to the good bit, the International Street Food Market should do the trick. Feeling competitive? Feel the heat with a chilli-eating competition. Or send the kids to their very own cookery school. Then, grab a drink from the numerous booze stalls dotted around the huge South Park, and sit and soak up the sun.

Oxford Foodies Festival takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
