Explore the Howardian Hills on two wheels and three rides, with enticing back-roads and country lanes that show you a hidden side of North Yorkshire.
Starting from the market town – and food lovers’ centre – of Malton, three routes fan out around the district, following undulating lanes through pretty-as-a-picture villages, estate parklands, shady woodlands and riverside meadows.
Historic houses en route (including Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall) add some focus to your day, while country tearooms, rustic pubs, farm shops and village bakeries are never very far away.
Head to Welburn, just south of Castle Howard, where award-winning Provenance Inns have bought their distinctive seasonal and local produce philosophy to the Crown & Cushion; you’ll also need to leave room for cake from Pattacakes, the real bakery and tearoom just opposite.
Bike hire in Malton is from R Yates Cycles – based in the town for over 100 years – or you can bring your own on the train from York or Scarborough.
