Enjoy a touch of class in a riverside Cotswold inn

Burford, Oxfordshire

The kind of place you dream of but seldom find – an old stone inn, full of charm and history, in the beautiful Cotswold village of Burford.

Situated alongside the River Windrush and at the heart of the charming village of Swinbrook, The Swan has a rich history.

The inn is owned by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, the last surviving Mitford sister. It was also the set-location for Lady Sybil’s elopement with the family chauffeur, Branson, in ‘Downton Abbey’.

It’s the quintessential English inn – its ancient stonewalls decked with wisteria, inside old beams, open fires and worn flagstone floors.

While the bedrooms have 15th century walls they also enjoy the benefits of modern interior design, each individually furnished and decorated.

The menu offers high quality seasonal dishes using the finest local produce – there are even free range chickens pecking round the back.
