Visit Penistone, the highest market town in the county. As well as being pretty to look at, there’s plenty to do and delicious food and ales to try.

Located high in the Pennine hills, in South Yorkshire, Penistone is a quaint town that offers a taste of rural Britain at its most attractive.

Enjoy stunning walks across Peak District moorland, take tea in charming cafés, browse traditional shops and sample the goodies at farmers markets. The nearby Trans Pennine Trail offers bike hire, for easy cycling through wild flower meadows, scenic countryside and Tour de France-inspired local artwork. There is also a number of spectacular reservoirs with plenty of surrounding walking, cycling and horse riding trails.

Taste some of Yorkshire's most delicious produce at the local food and farmers market, an event not to be missed. The town has plenty of traditional pubs, friendly restaurants and delicatessens to sample Yorkshire's finest dishes, with cute independent hotels to stay at.

Penistone is 16 minutes from Barnsley by rail, itself 2 hours 35 minutes from London.
