Rainy Day Activities: Be an engine driver for the day at STEAM
Swindon, Wiltshire
Try your hand at changing the signals, drive a model steam engine and walk under an 80 ton train at STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway.
Housed in a beautifully restored Grade II Listed building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works, this interactive museum will give you the opportunity to learn more about the history of steam trains and their influence on the country. Learn about the creation of the Great Western Railway, with exhibits on the people who operated the service to the original vision of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
With plenty of hands-on exhibits, the kids are sure to be entertained too; from signal boxes to shunting puzzles, there's plenty to keep them engaged as you wander around and take in the magnificent steam engines.
Combine your visit with a trip to next door McArthurGlen Designer Outlet (also set in the former Great Western Railway Works), where you can treat yourself to some great bargains.
STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is open every day of the year (except 24-26 December) and tickets can be booked in advance online.
