Walk through 800 years of history in Southampton’s Old Town

Southampton, Hampshire

Love history? Want to step back in time? Head to an area that has seen many famous faces pass along its streets.

From Jane Austen to William Shakespeare, Southampton’s visitors and residents have played important roles in adding to the history of the maritime city. You can experience what life used to be like for some of them by discovering the old quarter, with its traditional timber-framed buildings, historic pubs and cobbled streets.

The medieval town walls and former entrance to the city – the Bargate – still stand today. At Tudor House and Garden, a former 15th-century home, you can get an atmospheric insight in to the lives of its residents through the years.

In fact it’s so atmospheric, you might witness something altogether paranormal – Tudor House is one of Southampton’s most haunted buildings.
