June events: Cheer on a winner at the Northumberland Plate Festival

Newcastle, Tyne and Wear

Put on your posh frocks and enjoy three days of racing and live music at one of the biggest events in the North East horseracing calendar.

The thundering of hooves and roaring of the crowd has sounded across Newcastle Racecourse in Gosforth Park every year since 1882, making Northumberland Plate Festival one of the oldest and most famous horseracing events in the UK. The climax of this three day event is the Northumberland Plate, or “Pitman’s Derby” on Saturday, where horses and jockeys race to win £140,000 in prize money.

This year, the Saturday will be extra exciting, as Madness are set to perform a full live set for all ticket holders once the racing action has ended.

Whether you’re sitting up in the stands, waving your betting slip in the air, quaffing Champagne in the hospitality tents or cheering on the jockeys from the sidelines, this is your chance to celebrate flat racing in style.

Northumberland Plate Festival 2019 takes place between 27-29 June; tickets to each day are available online.
