Where to go on an accessible day out in Birmingham with Sophie Bradbury-Cox

Located just outside of the city centre, Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a fantastic place to visit for the whole family. Whether you have little ones who want to run around and play in the adventure playground or older kids who want to sit amongst the roses and enjoy the peace and quiet, it has something to suit everyone. The gardens are largely accessible but a few of the paths are slightly uneven.

With its art deco inspired interiors and a view out onto the canal, The Cosy Club in Brindley Place has a fun and welcoming atmosphere. It serves breakfast through to dinner in its first-floor restaurant that’s accessible via a lift or stairs, and there will always be something delicious on the menu whatever time you choose to visit.

A fantastic place to for adults and children alike, there is so much to look at and explore including an underwater tunnel and so many incredible sea creatures so learn about. The Sea Life Centre is very accessible with ramps to every area and the exhibits are large and easy to experience. It’s also indoors, so perfect if the weather outside isn’t ideal!

Spend time in Birmingham’s most iconic area, Gas Street Basin, covered with 35 miles of canal. Flowers adorn the bridges and lots of narrowboats gently sail by, perfect for a waterside stroll and some time out from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. You can also get a drink or bite to eat in the many bars and restaurants at Brindley Place overlooking the canal.

Located in Oozells Square, Piccolino is an ideal place to unwind after a day of exploring. Dine indoors on a plush, red leather sofa or eat al fresco on their sunny terrace There are so many incredible Italian dishes to choose from, too – from hand-stretched garlic bread to seafood risotto and even vegan and gluten-free specialities -  all accompanied by a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

With the most incredible views across Birmingham, the Hampton by Hilton is such a great place to stay. The hotel is located on Broad Street, which is close to the canals but still only a 15-20 minute walk into the city centre. The hotel is very accessible, with wide bedroom doors for easy entry,  spacious bathrooms with grab bars and emergency cords, and lift access to all floors. The daily breakfast is definitely worth waking up for, too.
