Get on your bike and discover Durham’s amazing history and heritage as you cycle the Lanchester Valley Railway Path.
Cycling is one of the best ways to really experience Durham’s beauty, and the Lanchester Valley Railway Path is a superb route that provides a fascinating insight into the county’s history and heritage.
The Lanchester Valley Railway was originally built to carry iron ore; it was open for passenger service for over 100 years. Cycle along the line and spot the old station houses and platforms, including the former Knitsley Station, where you can see where the line was lost through opencast mining and farming. Nowadays you can stop off at award-winning farm shop and café, Knitsley Farm Granary Café. Enjoy home-reared locally sourced meats, as well as a wonderful array of vegetables, home-baked treats and freshly cooked meals.
