The charming market town of Keswick sees the return of the Words by the Water Literary Festival (4-13 March), the North West’s premier festival of words and ideas. To celebrate Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday, the National Trust is hosting its first Children’s Book Festival Weekend (4-6 March) at Wray Castle. Come and meet your favourite authors and illustrators and keep an eye out for Peter Rabbit. A major draw for foodies, the Kendal Festival of Food (12-13 March) returns to the popular market town of Kendal for the seventh time with a host of tempting new additions as well as the renowned England’s North Country Market. The Bowness Bay Blues Festival (18 - 20 March) features a wide range of top blues acts including Trafficker, Tommy Allen, and Sean Webster and the Deadlines.

Spring brings a literary treat to Lancashire with the 37th Litfest (17-20 March) taking place in Lancaster with a host of events including multimedia storytelling, which brings together projection, animation, sound and live performance. Cheer on Britain’s professional cyclists as they race along a 100 mile course through towns, villages, and scenic countryside at the Chorley Grand Prix – British Cycling Elite Road Series (26 March). Experience a fantastic mix of international jazz musicians at the Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues Festival (28 April – 2 May), as well as big name acts like Courtney Pine and Ray Gelato, there will be plenty of free music taking place in pubs and street parties.

The stunning open air Yorkshire Sculpture Park presents the first UK museum exhibition by KAWS (6 February– 12 June), the renowned American artist. The Park’s historically designed landscape will become home to a series of monumental and imposing sculptures. With Patrick Stewart and Lemn Sissay as its patrons, and a visit from Irvine Welsh scheduled, 2016 marks a big year for the Huddersfield Literature Festival's 10th anniversary (3–13 March). The Harrogate Flower Shows (21st – 24th April) are widely regarded as the UK's biggest and most prestigious independent gardening events. Enjoy show gardens and great garden shopping, live cookery demonstrations and lively garden chat. 2016 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of landscape architect Lancelot Capability Brown and you can Celebrate England’s greatest gardener at Kirkharle (25 – 27 March). Enjoy an evening torchlight procession around Brown’s serpentine lake just beside the Kirkharle Courtyard. Kielder Observatory sits under some of the darkest skies in Europe and puts on a wide range of events for budding astronomers, including Night Sky Safari (various dates), an event designed to maximise your stargazing time. See Belsay in Bloom, Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens (29 April – 1 May) welcomes spring to Northumberland with a fun-packed weekend of garden tours, workshops, kids' garden trails and games. Visit a Victorian wonderland at Cragside (13 February onwards) and step into the brilliant world of North East pioneer Lord Armstrong, the Victorian inventor and landscape genius behind it.
