Delve into the Aviation History of RAF Cranwell

Cranwell, Lincolnshire

Learn about the first Military Air Academy in the world and discover its aviation history dating back to World War 1.

Royal Air Force Cranwell started as a base for the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in 1915, alerting shore defences against invasion and training officers in aeroplanes and airships.  In 1920 it became RAF College Cranwell, the first Military Air Academy in the world, and has been training pilots ever since.

The Cranwell Aviation Heritage Centre portrays the history of this famous airbase from its WW1 beginnings to the current day operations through artefacts, displays and interactive exhibits.

Examine the authentic Jet Provost in the courtyard and try to land one on the RAF Cranwell runway in the flight simulator. Learn about the historic WW1 'Lighter than Air' observation balloon section and browse aviation memorabilia in the gift shop. A must visit for any aviation fans.
