Explore the Norman fortress of Richmond Castle

Richmond, North Yorkshire

Built to subdue the unruly North of England, Richmond Castle sits against the stunning backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales.

In a strategic position on the ‘riche-mont', or 'strong-hill, above the River Swale, the triangular Norman Fortress of Richmond Castle is a nationally important building, with a long and turbulent history.

Climb the 132 flagstone steps to the top of the 100-foot high keep, and your reward is a stunning view of the surrounding Dales – not to mention Richmond’s 11th century skyline.

Why not pack a picnic to enjoy in the secluded Cockpit Garden, a grassy amphitheatre in the shadows of the castle, where 16 topiary sculptures represent the conscientious objectors who were imprisoned in Richmond Castle during the First World War? Thought-provoking stuff.
