Take a walk with the wildlife in the Lake District

Cumbria’s wild zone is pure Beatrix Potter, and the animals that influenced her tales are all around you. While the lady herself took a shine to the native Herdwick sheep that roam the area, keep an eye out and you might come across the Lake’s lesser sighted residents, too. Squirrel Nutkin (or a distant red squirrel relative at least) can be seen scampering through the trees here, and there’s always fun to be had otter-spotting over lunch.

Just make sure you don’t miss a peregrine falcon swooping onto its prey while you’re busy photographing wild mountain ponies ambling across the fells. Yep, the hardest bit about spending a day in this part of the country is deciding where to look first.
