Take a flight to the Heights of Abraham

Matlock, Derbyshire

Discover famous show caverns beneath a 60-acre hilltop park overlooking a deep, dramatic limestone gorge in the Peak District.

When this Peak District attraction first opened its doors back in 1787, people used to scale the Heights of Abraham on foot or by donkey. Worth thinking about as you sit back in the comfort of a cable car for the scenic ride to the top of Masson Hill, a thousand feet above sea level.

Once you reach the top, your ticket gives you access to the two underground guided tours through illuminated lead mining caverns where guides explain the geological and mining history a third of a mile underground. Back on the surface there are three heritage exhibitions charting the history of the estate that was known as a “Savage Garden” in Georgian times, and several woodland trails to explore and – if the little ones have still got the energy – two adventure playgrounds.

Top the day off by climbing the Victorian Prospect tower to get the spectacular views out over Matlock and the Peak District beyond. Complete your day out in Matlock Bath with a walk by the riverside and some traditional fish and chips.
