Discover a secluded fortified manor house at Aydon Castle

Corbridge, Northumberland

Over 900 years old and pretty much unaltered since then, Aydon Castle sits proudly upon its crag; a true survivor of some rough times and visitors.

Originally an undefended residence, it was quickly upgraded and fortified when the English and Scottish war begun. The castle was raided and burnt by the Scots in 1315, and recaptured by English rebels two year later, before being occupied again by the Scots in 1346.

Today it is managed by English Heritage and is one of the finest examples of a 13th century English manor house, perched high above woodlands, with steep banks dropping off on three of its sides. Spend the day exploring this historic castle and enjoy a picnic on its grounds.
