It's no secret that the legendary Sherlock Holmes was thought up by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle whilst living in Portsmouth. Nowadays, the city is home to a large collection of Conan Doyle memorabilia, on display in an exhibition covering the ground floor of Portsmouth Museum: ‘A Study in Sherlock’.

And don't miss out on exploring the rest of this free museum. The Story of Portsmouth exhibition looks at how life has changed in the city over the centuries through room reconstructions, historical memorabilia and even working amusement machines.
