Sunderland’s magical Christmas Lights switch-on

Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

Recognised as signalling the beginning of the festive celebrations, the annual Christmas switch-on is a tradition Sunderland is proud to keep.

When the nights draw in darker and colder, it is time to bring out the woolly hats, scarves and boots to attend the switch-on event in the city centre.

Go with a group of friends or with your family and be part of the huge celebrations. Enjoy a raft of activities that start to spread the magic across Sunderland including live music, illuminations and a breath taking fireworks display.

Christmas is all about family and tradition, and the switch-on of the lights across Sunderland is something which really signifies that the holiday season is here.

Join Sunderland’s Mayor and special guests in the countdown to the big switch-on to illuminate the city centre and get into the Christmas spirit with mass carol singing, cheering and a lit Santa sleigh in Mowbray Park. It is time to enjoy the beginning of the festivities.
