Forming part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with Stonehenge, Avebury is the lesser-known of Wiltshire’s stone circles, despite being the largest in the world. The great stone circle dates from around 4,500 years ago and encloses part of the village. Visitors can wander freely amongst the stones within the stone circle.
Don’t miss the Alexander Keiller Museum detailing more about the archaeological excavations that have taken place at Avebury throughout the years. Nearby you will find an ‘avenue’ of stones that originally led to The Sanctuary; one of Britain’s largest burial sites at West Kennet Long Barrow; and the mysterious man-made mound of Silbury Hill.
All of this gives a real air of mystery and excitement to Avebury. Combine your visit with a trip to Stonehenge and the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes where you can learn more about the wider archaeological landscape.
