Take an inspiring trip through Shanklin Chine

Shanklin, Isle of Wight

This leafy gorge on the Isle of Wight is lined with rare plants, wildlife and waterfalls, making for a magical walk day or night.

As one of the Isle of Wight’s oldest and most beloved tourist attractions, Shanklin Chine has provided the inspiration for countless artists, writers and poets over the years; it seems to capture the imaginations of all those who wander through it.

Starting in Shanklin Old Village, the chine is a naturally carved gorge, providing a spectacular walk from the hills to the beach. Lined with trees, a wide variety of shrubs and plants, and a spectacular waterfall, Shanklin Chine offers a peaceful and memorable route through a historic location. Visit at night and you can enjoy bright, colourful illuminations which have been designed and curated to add an extra dimension to the natural beauty of the area.

At the foot of the chine is the Victorian Chine Lodge, which now forms a heritage centre with seasonal and permanent art and history exhibitions. From here journey down to the Fisherman’s Cottage pub, which runs onto Shanklin Beach, and put your feet up with a well-earned refreshing drink.

Shanklin Chine is open daily from 10am to 5pm (7pm on Fridays and Saturdays); a day/evening return ticket costs £5.60 per adult and £4 per child.
