Murder in the cathedral

Canterbury, Kent

Visit one of England's most beautiful cities - and the site of one of its most famous murders

At Canterbury Cathedral you can walk in the holy footsteps of Archbishop Thomas Becket who, in 1170, was brutally murdered by four knights under the order of King Henry II – in the cathedral itself.

This exact spot has become a mecca for many Christians, but even if you’re not religious, it’s still pretty cool. Brightly-lit, iron-clast windows tell the stories of the life and times of the cathedral, including the murder plot, and even see the spot where Thomas’ tomb once lay before being destroyed by King Henry VIII.

Pay your respects to this holy seat of Christianity, rounded off with a stay overnight in the Cathedral Lodge, with stunning views of the cathedral - surprisingly serene and tranquil once the medieval gates are closed overnight.
