England’s Halloween Horrors

October 2022: England is full of pumpkin patches, enchanted trails, haunted castles and after dark experiences to give everyone a little fright this Halloween. Here’s our pick of spooky October events and experiences across the country for young and old.

NEW: 'ScareCity Experience’, Chorley

30 September – 31 October (selected dates)

Scare City Experience will be the world's longest walkthrough outdoor horror attraction with 12 spine-chilling zones. The two-hour fully-immersive walk-through will feature live actors lurking in the likes of Knightmare Alley, the Forest of Fears and the Medieval Murder Zone.

NEW: SAW: The Experience, London

Late October – December 2022

A new multi-room immersive escape room experience comes to the capital this October in partnership with Lionsgate, Twisted Pictures and The Path Entertainment Group. In teams of six, visitors can choose from two paths to redemption, taking on heart-stopping tasks in this 90-minute challenge. The Jigsaw A route is wheelchair accessible.

After Dark Event, House of Frankenstein, Bath

21 – 31 October, 6 – 11pm

A multi-sensory horror event for 15+ only, the ‘After Dark – nights to die for’ event at the House of Frankenstein in Bath promises a trip into purgatory with live actors, special effects and disturbing aromascapes across five floors. After, there’s the chance to steady your nerves in the Bloody Mary’s Bar.

Psycho Path presents Fear Ground, Newcastle Upon Tyne

30 September – 31 October (selected dates)

Billed as the North East’s biggest scare attraction, this Scream Park offers up an array of scare attractions; mazes; Stage Fright spectacles and more on selected dates throughout October.

NEW: The Real Ghosts Of Norfolk, Bure Valley Railway, Aylsham Station

31 October

Get up close and personal with Vampire Hunter and Paranormal Investigator Abraham Van Horning for a Halloween to remember. Settle in for an evening of ghost stories over dinner from a Norfolk local in the setting of Aylsham Station. 16+ only.

NEW: Norwich on the Dark Side walking tour, Norfolk
29 October and 31 October at 6pm
This 1 hour 45 minutes guided walking tour looks at the darker side of Norwich. The tour starts outside the Erpingham Gate of Norwich Cathedral and finishes in the Market Place. Hear about grizzly tales of the plague, the ups and downs of Kett’s Rebellion, the horror of Lollards Pit, drunken 17th century antics, celebrated Victorian murders and executions, floods, filth and grime – all stories from the darker side of Norwich.

FEAR, Avon Valley Scream Park, between Bath and Bristol

14 – 31 October

Not for the faint-hearted (and for 16+ only), this year’s FEAR Scream Park at Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park is bigger and better with new features including the chance to face the demon within and participate in ‘The Exorcism’. For 11 – 15 year olds keen for a slice of the action, there’s a separate FEARless event (from 23 October). For family visitors, the Park is also home to the less spine-chilling Pumpkin Patch Days and Nights experiences throughout the month.

NEW: Join a Séance in one of England’s most haunted cities, York Dungeon

26 September – 6 November

Travel back in time to 1872 and join York Dungeon’s Victorian Medium, Madame Card for a sinister Séance experience this Halloween. Part of the Dungeon Admission, there’s also the chance to join Dungeon LATES, which promises a darker and scarier experience and includes a new exclusive show, Bodysnatchers. For daytime haunted happenings, try the family-friendly Little Peasants Walking Tour around the city during half term (22 – 30 October), visiting some of York’s infamous landmarks with the York Dungeon’s Jester and his sidekick.

Spooky Trails and Ghost Tours for all ages

 

Ghostly goings on, nationwide across English Heritage sites

Various dates in October/November

Explore selected English Heritage sites through a supernatural lens this autumn with storytellers and historians on hand to offer guided tours focused on the ghostly histories associated with the landmarks. Guided tours will include a ‘Revenants and Remains’ experience at Furness Abbey and Lanercost Priory in Cumbria; Roche Abbey in South Yorkshire and Byland Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey in the North York Moors led by English Heritage’s Dr Michael Carter and Professor Dale Townshend from Manchester Metropolitan University. Elsewhere visitors can enjoy evening ghost tours at locations including Eltham Palace and Gardens, Carlisle Castle and Tynemouth Priory between 28 – 31 October. For those with families in tow, new events include a Half Term Beano Halloween Quest at over 20 English Heritage sites.

The Secret Garden and Cemetery Liverpool Walking Tour

26 October (and selected weekly dates)

Enjoy spine-tingling ghost stories and discover the city’s secret corners on this after-dark walking tour of Liverpool. Over 90 minutes, the tour brings to life the history and heritage of sites including the haunted Philharmonic Hall, the depths of the Necropolis and St James’ Cemetery Gardens.

City Ghost Tours: Bath and Oxford

Ghosts tours are a fun (yet unsettling!) way to explore a city with a twist and learn about its famed locations through a spooky lens. Bath Ghost Tours reveal the city’s ghost stories and haunted locations from the Romans to date with theatrics and paranormal experiments. Meanwhile, Oxford Ghost Tours (Hallowe’en Week is 30 October – 5 November) reveals dark secrets and spine-tingling tales including the bleakest moments in university history.

National Trust Halloween Happenings, Nationwide

22 – 30 October (and selected dates)

Broomstick racing and wand making at Croft Castle and Parkland in Herefordshire; a Halloween half term trail at Gibside near Newcastle or a Scary Squirrels trail on Dorset’s Brownsea Island are just a few of the National Trust Halloween adventures awaiting visitors this October. Plus, until 30 November, up to two adults and four children can enjoy the National Trust for free, with a single use admission pass available (terms and conditions apply).

Half term Halloween fun at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire

22 – 30 October 2021

Bring your little monsters to the farmyard to meet the animals and join in with creepy crafts. For those feeling brave, dare to ride the mysterious Halloween trailer into Warlock Wood to help battle the ghastly ghouls. Activities included with admission price.

Enchanted Halloween at Trentham Estate, Stoke-on-Trent
14 – 31 October

The mischievous fairies have cast their spells to make pumpkins appear on a brand-new patch next to Trentham Hall, deep inside the Italian Gardens. There will be opportunities for visitors to enjoy a hot chocolate and a toffee apple as they hunt high and low for their perfect pumpkin – as well as to make wands and broomsticks, spot scarecrows, and even book a Big Top Halloween Spooktacular event from Gandeys Circus.

NEW: Luna’s Lost Spell Halloween themed trail at Chester Zoo

1 – 31 October

Crowned Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, Chester Zoo is launching an all-new interactive Halloween Trail this autumn. Using augmented reality, visitors will need to help Luna the witch in her quest to find her lost spell, crafted with poisons and venoms from the world of nature by taking a mysterious adventure to discover six amazing species.

Canoe Halloween Treasure Hunt, New Forest
22 – 30 October

Treat (not trick) little monsters to some scarily good fun on the Beaulieu River this Halloween. Head out in a stable Canadian canoe for a two-hour hunt for devilishly delicious Halloween candy along the riverside.

Spooky Tours at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire
19 – 29 October
Spooky torchlit tours of one of England’s grandest Elizabethan houses return this October with more scary stories and haunting hidden history. Led by ghostly expert Martin Tempest and his fiendish friends, this year the guided tours will offer the chance for visitors to brave the creepiest corners and darkest depths of the grounds at Burghley. Designed to be scary but fun, the tours reveal Burghley’s ghostly goings-on across the centuries and promise plenty of history, as well as scares, during the 50-minute flickering torchlight trails.

Halloweden at the Eden Project, Cornwall

22 – 30 October

Discover the superstitions and traditions of Halloween at the Eden Project this half term with a mysterious Magpie Trail; story time in the Pumpkin Patch and Weave a Web workshops. Plus, the attraction will be open after dark until 8pm (22 – 28 October) for the chance to enjoy the Eden Project by twilight and take on a new bewitching torchlit trail through the Rainforest Biome.

Halloween at Warwick Castle

October 2022

Venture through The Haunted Hollows, meet the Witches of Warwick, and explore the castle grounds spooky décor, pumpkins and more this October as part of the Halloween festivities. From 22 – 31 October the Haunted Castle experience will offer up a range of interactive experiences including special Halloween schools and spooky performances on the Dead Centre Stage with some brand-new experiences for 2022. For those feeling a little braver, The Castle After Dark experience (22, 23, 28 – 31 October) will spook visitors with fearful frights and haunted spirits. There’s also the chance to stay overnight in Fright’s Village and enjoy evening ghost stories and a breakfast visit from witches and wizards.

Illuminated Abbey, Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire

23 – 31 October

2022 is the 125th anniversary of the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, so where better to celebrate Halloween than at its inspirational gothic backdrop. Whitby Abbey will once again be illuminated after dark with the chance to experience the story of Dracula brought to life.

Brush up on your witching and wizardry skills at the Witches Training Centre at Groombridge Place, where resident witches Gertrude and Wanda will be guiding visitors through spooky experiments; pumpkin hunts and Halloween shows.

Owl-O-Ween at The Hawk Conservancy Trust, Hampshire

28 October

The bird of prey visitor attraction and conservation charity is hosting a series of Owls by Moonlight events this autumn. Visitors will have the chance to step into the nocturnal world of British owls and get an insight into some of the conservation and research projects that the Trust undertakes with flying displays and meeting owls in the Trust’s care. Owl-O-Ween will take place on 28 October with special interactive spooky shows.

Halloween at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire

21 – 31 October
Join  Blenheim Palace for a frighteningly fun half term full of creepy crafts, gruesome games, and petrifying pumpkins.
