Celebrate 100 Years of the BBC with Exhibitions and Interactive Experiences across England

September 2022: The BBC centenary – known as 'BBC 100' – has spanned the entirety of 2022 with sports, events and landmark commissions for TV, radio and online. The broadcaster was founded on 18 October 1922 and became one of the world’s most important platforms for news and entertainment, having broadcast to over 200 countries in more than 40 languages.

 

This autumn, there are plenty of ways to experience the BBC beyond the sofa, including special centenary exhibitions in Manchester, London and Bradford, as well as immersive Peaky Blinders theatre shows, Sherlock escape rooms and Fawlty Towers dinner parties.

 

Special BBC Centenary Exhibitions

 

100 Years of the BBC in Manchester at The Science and Industry Museum, Manchester

Running until February 2023

Experience Manchester through the lens of the BBC, as this temporary exhibition showcases the journey the city has been a part of, from the 1920s to the innovation seen today. To guide visitors through the history of the iconic network, the exhibition will feature objects, photographs and their accompanying stories, combined with historic never-before-seen objects and cutting-edge new technologies. Discover Manchester’s first radio station 2ZY and its link to the BBC, early radio experimentation projects, what it was like to work and perform at the studio, and developments over the past decade at MediaCityUK.

BBC at 100 at the Science Museum, London

Running until January 2023

BBC at 100 is a special display at the Science Museum in London showcasing objects from across the BBC’s long history, including radio, television and digital programming. The exhibit explores how the BBC has used broadcast technologies to deliver its mission to inform, educate and entertain its audiences. Travel back in time with the 1944 BBC ‘Midget’ portable disc recorder, used by war correspondents on the Western Front. Enter the world of Doctor Who and meet an original 1980s Cyberman. From the Computer Literacy Project and BBC Microcomputer to BBC Bitesize, see how the BBC has spent the last century shaping and supporting education. To further tell the stories of the BBC, the Science Museum Group has digitised 1,000 objects from the BBC Heritage Collection for the first time.

Switched On at the National Science and Media Museum, Bradford

Running until January 2023

Bradford’s National Science and Media Museum presents a major exhibition celebrating the last 100 years of broadcasting and the innovations that have shaped everyday life. Switched On takes take visitors on a journey from the first radio microphones to the invention of colour TV and the rise of on-demand video and streaming services. The exhibition examines the industry through 14 pioneers who have forced the industry to adapt, improve and make room for more voices. Visitors can learn about influential trailblazers like David Attenborough, who led the introduction of colour on BBC2, and Delia Derbyshire, who created the Doctor Who theme tune in 1963, marking the first television tune made purely from electronic sound, among many others.

Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder, World Museum, Liverpool

Running until 30 October 2022

This world-premiere exhibition uncovers the science within the universe of Doctor Who. The immersive experience explores Doctor Who’s epic monsters, costumes and props with science being brought to life through some of the Doctor’s adventures and encounters. Visitors can engage with original artefacts, sets and much more – a must-see for any fan of Doctor Who and science enthusiasts too.

Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, London

12 October – 6 November 2022

Inspired by the smash hit show, acclaimed dance company Rambert is bringing Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, to London’s Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre for a limited run this autumn. As featured in the Commonwealth Games 2022 closing ceremony, the production is a captivating dramatisation of the Shelby family. The 20-person Rambert dance company will perform physical and athletic dance with a live band playing specially commissioned music. Written by the creator of the international smash hit television series, this new performing arts event digs deeper into the story of Thomas Shelby and the Peaky Blinders crew.

Faulty Towers the Dining Experience, across England

The much-loved BBC TV series Fawlty Towers will be bought to life through a unique dining-experience-cross-theatre-show. A tribute to the original BBC series, the audience will become diners in the show’s restaurant with the main characters serving a 70s-style three-course meal. Experience the internationally acclaimed BBC series across England in locations including Sussex, Hertfordshire, Nottinghamshire and Lancashire.

The Game is Now, Sherlock The Official Live Game, London

Step foot into the world of Sherlock with this hybrid immersive experience, escape room and detective-themed bar. From the makers of the hit BBC series, The Game is Now opens up the show’s immersive sets and environments featuring original content from the stars of the show including Oscar-nominated Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott and Martin Freeman. Visitors become detectives for a few hours, working as a team solving mysteries and puzzles before the time runs out. Afterwards, Sherlock’s speakeasy is the perfect place to refuel and also offers pre-bookable themed cocktail experiences and afternoon teas.

Killing Eve Film Tour, London

Silver screen tour icons BritMovie bring everyone’s favourite spy-drama series to life with a fascinating Killing Eve London film locations tour. Following in the footsteps of criminal mastermind Villanelle, the series was filmed across many of Europe’s most iconic cities, with this expert-led tour revealing 10 of the most intriguing filming locations across the British capital. Sites on the walking tour include the hospital where Eve and Villanelle first cross paths, the tube platform where Villanelle kills Rhian – the assassin for The Twelve – and the location of the AA meeting where Villanelle goes undercover as Billie and throws Amber Peel's chaperone in front of a truck.

Peaky Blinders: The Rise, London

Tommy and the Shelby family are inviting visitors back to the 1920s to join one of their notorious family meetings, with the agenda of taking over the city. Headquartered in Camden Town’s purpose-built Garrison Pub, this 360-degree immersive theatre experience based on the BBC gangster series will take groups to multiple venues and across a variety of storylines, from meeting the family’s associates and enemies to visiting the infamous Eden Club. The show will follow the rise and the fall of the family and catapult the audience into the heart of the story with live actors and 20s décor.

CBeebies Land at Alton Towers Resort, Staffordshire

Families can experience live shows and interactive attractions with their favourite CBeebies friends at Alton Towers Resort. New CBeebies Land attractions for 2022 include Hey Duggee’s Big Adventure Badge, Andy’s Adventures Dinosaur Dig, as well as JoJo & Gran Gran at Home. There are also two new shows coming to the Big Fun Show Time programme – Bing and Flop and Hey Duggee’s The Map Badge.
