Take the whole family to Chester Zoo

Upton near Chester, Cheshire

Venture to tantalising tropical islands in the heart of Cheshire with innovative exhibits at the UK’s most popular zoo.

Chester Zoo still thrives on the creative spirit of its founder George Mottershead - a famous pioneer of no-bars zoos who back in 1931 preferred to use ditches and moats to separate the animals. Today, the zoo remains at the forefront of innovative conservation, shown to the full with recreations of various tropical biomes, including Gir National Park in India (home to a pride of Asiatic Lions) and Madagascar.

Conservation comes to life as you enjoy an expedition over bridges and a journey on water that links the islands in what is one of the most ambitious zoo developments in Europe. With over 12,500 animals and 400 different species, there's a great variety in the zoo and every animal is properly cared and catered for by dedicated staff; learn more about these projects or simply take in the sights and sounds on your journey around the zoo.

The kids will be kept busy too with multiple playgrounds and art activities on-site. Plan your trip in advance with the site's helpful day planner, and be sure to book more than 7 days in advance to save a little bit of money too.

Chester Zoo is set to re-open on the 15th June at 10am. Visitors must pre-book a time slot for entry, and keep 2 metres apart from other visitors at all times. Hand sanitising stations will be dotted around the zoo to ensure you're never far from somewhere to wash your hands. Indoor spaces and walk-through exhibits will remain closed until further notice, and food outlets will be offering takeaway options only.
