Rainy Day Activities: Visit much-loved author Beatrix Potter’s home

Near Sawrey, Hawkshead, Cumbria

Uncover the life of the children’s author and illustrator as you explore the enchanting landscapes that inspired her.

Idyllically located, it’s easy to see why iconic storyteller, illustrator and conservationist Beatrix Potter loved her home in the Lake District so much.

The creator of The Tale of Peter Rabbit celebrated the British landscape and country life in her wonderful books, whose illustrations invite young and old alike to enter a charmingly quaint world. Now you really can - visit Hill Top, which Beatrix used as her haven and holiday retreat. Now managed by the National Trust, the house is presented as though its owner had just popped out, and every room contains a reference to a picture in a 'tale'.

Potter is credited with preserving much of the land that now forms the beautiful Lake District National Park where Hill Top is situated; from the farmhouse, you can head out and explore the panoramic landscapes or head across Windermere to continue Beatrix Potter's story at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction.
