Bring a masterpiece to life at Conisbrough Castle

Doncaster, South Yorkshire

This romantic medieval castle inspired Sir Walter Scott’s classic book Ivanhoe. Travel back nearly 1,000 years on a visit to the magnificent property.

Discover (or reacquaint yourself with) the classic British novel Ivanhoe in the very place that inspired it, Conisbrough Castle. Scott’s book shaped our view of “merry old England” and gave us the modern characters of Robin Hood and his merry men. Ivanhoe became a worldwide best seller and popularised the romance of Robin Hood and the English Middle Ages around the globe.

The medieval castle has one of England’s best-preserved keep towers. Visit to see why it had such an impact on Scott. Managed by English Heritage, today’s visitors can tour the grounds and climb up the tower, listening to the ghost-like characters that appear before them on each level. See spectacular views from the top and pick up your copy of Ivanhoe at the gift shop.

Conisbrough Castle is 2 hours north from London by rail.
