Relive the Industrial Revolution

You’ll find the biggest mills, the first trans-Pennine canals and railways and some of the longest tunnels of their day in Calderdale. It’s an area steeped in history, from the 900-year-old pillars in Halifax Minster to the 30-metre (100 foot) magnificence of Stoodley Pike Monument. Wainhouse Tower in Halifax is said to be one of the largest follies in the world. When you get close to these majestic monuments, explore the rugged rural landscape with its powerful mills, you’ll be sure to appreciate the importance of Calderdale’s heritage. 

A highlight is the unique Piece Hall.  This Grade I listed Georgian masterpiece, the oldest remaining cloth hall in Britain, is a huge open-air courtyard, surrounded by a mix of independent bars, restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops. The stories of Georgian Halifax are told in exhibition spaces, while the central courtyard plays host to a year-round events programme of music, film, spectacle and dance for up to 7,500 people at a time.
