Walk through Cumbria’s history and gardens

Lake District, Cumbria

Be dazzled by the beauty of the Lake District’s historic houses and gardens, and gain a sense of the area’s fascinating past and present.

The magnificent houses and gardens of the Lake District, in northwest England, give a captivating insight into how people lived in the past, and still do, in this unique corner of the country. Many great houses are still lived in by families whose lineage goes back hundreds of years. Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family for 800 years; you can visit for a tour. Holker Hall combines the elegance of the Victorian era with the warmth and welcome of a family home. Its gardens are not to be missed – look out for the famous herd of Menil fallow deer.

Garden- and poetry-lovers shouldn’t miss Rydal Mount, where the Romantic poet William Wordsworth lived for 37 years; here he wrote many of his poems and landscaped beautiful terraced gardens.

Rydal Mount is a short drive from Windermere, which is 3 hours from London by train.
