Follow in the footsteps of great artists in Constable Country

Suffolk’s iconic countryside scenes have been captured on canvas by both Gainsborough and Constable. Discover these rural landscapes for yourself– some of which have barely changed in two centuries – on a walk or cycle along the “Painter’s Trail,” a 60km route through west Suffolk. Seek out the exact spots where works such as Two Boys Fishing, Cornard Wood, The Stour Valley and Dedham Village and were painted. And as you ramble beside the serene River Stour, keep an eye out for Willy Lott’s House at Flatford, a Grade I listed farmhouse which features in Constable’s The Hay Wain.

In nearby Ipswich, The 500-year-old Christchurch Mansion holds the largest collection of Constable and Gainsborough’s work outside London, and is a must-visit art exhibition if you want to see the great masters’ work up close. For the remainder of this year, the collection includes Constable’s six-foot Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831.
