Rainy Day Activities: Explore underground history at Ramsgate Tunnels

Ramsgate, Kent

Take a step back in time to discover what life was like in this network of underground tunnels, home to thousands of people during the Second World War.

Despite being far removed from the trenches and battlefields of the Second World War, Ramsgate played a key role for the British army in the early stages of the war. The town’s Royal Harbour saw a flotilla of hundreds of small vessels (later known as the ‘little ships’) set sail to Dunkirk to aid the evacuation of troops from the beaches in Operation Dynamo.

Ramsgate Tunnels also played a key role in keeping people safe during the war; thousands of people sought shelter in these man-made tunnels (originally built for an underground railway) during the Blitz. Explore these intricate, atmospheric tunnels and learn the stories of those who lived underground on a guided tour - hard hats and torches are provided!

If you're looking for an adventurous family activity (ideal for a rainy day), book a tour of Ramsgate Tunnels online; tickets cost £7 per adult and £4 per child.
