July events: Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire

Originally one of the world’s biggest battle re-enactments, this event in the normally quiet village of Tewkesbury has grown into a festival recreating all aspects of medieval life.

Tewkesbury is an ancient settlement at the meeting of the Rivers Severn and Avon. Here you will see one of the best medieval townscapes in England, with fine half-timbered buildings, overhanging upper storeys and narrow alleyways. In 1471, the fields to the south was the site of the penultimate battle in the War of the Roses, leading the house of York to power.

Today, the battle is re-enacted at the internationally renowned Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, held on the original battle site every July. This event brings the whole town and its surrounding fields to life with colour and men and women dressed in Medieval garb and armour. Grand medieval tents, vibrant market stalls and all kinds of traditional entertainment make for a fantastic weekend of medieval merriment.

On the Sunday, the festival revellers parade through the streets of Tewkesbury, bringing the town to a standstill with tons of noise and excitement.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is free to attend.
