Explore the colourful history of Newcastle Castle

Unlock the door to the city’s medieval and historic heart on a visit to Newcastle Castle, which was built between 1168 and 1178. The Castle Keep and Black Gate were refurbished and reopened to the public in 2015 as Newcastle Castle. They now tell the story of the vagrants, vagabonds and villains who have dwelled here over the centuries.

From royal splendour to grim dungeons, new exhibits allow you to experience what life would have been like for inhabitants in these two well-preserved medieval buildings.

The stone Castle Keep sits upon ground previously occupied by a Roman fort, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and the Norman timber and earth castle from which the city takes its name. Go on a ghost-hunting expedition, or head up to the castle’s rooftop and take in outstanding views of the city.
