Castles, keeps and country retreats

King's Lynn, Norfolk

Explore the keep and ramparts of a 12th century castle, and the ornate interiors and gardens of Houghton Hall and Sandringham House.

Just north of King's Lynn, the majestic Castle Rising Castle is one of the best preserved  12th century castle keeps in England to explore along with the massive surrounding earthworks . Built in around 1140 AD, it has been a royal residence, hunting lodge and was once home to Queen Isabella, widow and alleged murderer of Edward II.

Once home to Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, Houghton Hall is the realisation of his architectural dream, with its stunning Palladian architecture, opulent interiors and landscaped gardens. It’s now also home to a deer park, sculpture park and toy soldier museum.

There’s also much to see and do at the Royal family's country retreat at Sandringham. Explore landscaped gardens, woodland paths and nature trails at the estate’s country park, browse the museum collections, and get a glimpse of Royal family life in the great house.
