Experience Somerleyton Hall’s romance, history and grandeur

Somerleyton, Suffolk

Step back in time with a visit to one of Suffolk’s best-preserved stately homes and gardens, near the town of Lowestoft.

Somerleyton is widely regarded as one of England’s best examples of a Tudor-Jacobean mansion, though a manor house has occupied the site since 1240AD. Brimming with history and elegance, a tour through its interiors reveals gorgeously decorated rooms and stunning pieces of art.

Fronting the hall is a grand formal English garden, its terraces originally laid out in 1846 by William Nestfield, landscape architect for Kew Gardens. Nestfield also laid out the elaborate yew maze, which visitors can spend many a happy hour exploring. Look out for Somerleyton’s collection of glasshouses and peach cases designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, the architect of Crystal Palace.

Learn how to propagate delphiniums with Anna Outlaw, the dynamic Head Gardener. Then take some time to stroll the estate’s peaceful grounds, with 5,000 acres to explore. Pop into the estate’s own pub, The Duke’s Head, for a taste of a range of Suffolk real ales.
