For generations, the estate (which was first built in 1642) was an example of agricultural self-sufficiency, producing enough milk, cheese and bread to feel the whole household and its employees.

Today the house’s past is brought to life by friendly volunteers, who’ll be only too happy to regale you with stories of its rakish founder, James Murgatroyd, and point out certain intriguing features (a hiding place for Catholic priests, for example!).

Relax on your cheap weekend break with a stroll around the walled garden with its medicinal herb border. Spring is a great time to wander down to the Riverside Walk where you can observe the ebb and flow of wildlife carried along by the River Aire – better yet, view it undisturbed from the safety of a bird hide… a whole day’s activities, in fact, for the cost of one reasonably-priced family ticket. Well worth a cheap UK break.
