Rainy Day Activities: Hop from gallery to shop at the Salts Mill

Saltaire, West Yorkshire

Found near Bradford, the Yorkshire Salts Mill is an indoor hive of art galleries and indie shops, set within the culturally rich World Heritage Site of Saltaire.

This Grade II listed mill forms the focal point for Saltaire, a model village created in 1853 by the Victorian industrialist Sir Titus Salt for his workers. Today its spacious, well-lit interiors are dedicated not to industry but to a host of cultural activities.

On the ground floor, you’ll find the 1853 Gallery, home to the world’s largest collection of works from Yorkshire artist David Hockney, including his iconic scenes of Bradford. On the second floor is Gallery 2, which houses limited time exhibitions, usually focused on some aspect of art in Yorkshire.

Make time to browse the hub of independent shops found under the Salts Mill's roof too, featuring everything from bikes to musical instruments to antiques.
