Discover the quirky side of Robin Hood’s Bay

Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby

Enjoy a traditional seaside break with a twist at this old smuggling and fishing village on the North York Moors National Park coast.

Go beachcombing, rock-pooling and on clifftop walks at Robin Hood’s Bay, and don’t miss the offbeat attractions and lively food scene that make this atmospheric village unique.

Dig deep on a fossil-hunting trip or dinosaur footprint walk along coastline that’s straight out of the Jurassic era; Hidden Horizons organise tours from their shop in town. Then set out on the trail of the ‘Baytown’ smugglers, who took rum, silk and treasure through the village’s hideaway alleys and secret tunnels. It’s less about crime and more about local brews nowadays: Baytown beers and locally ground coffee from the Baytown Coffee Company add an artisan flavour to your seaside break.

For something truly unusual, stay the night in The Pigsty, a converted cottage where the local squire really did once keep his pigs, now operated by The Landmark Trust.

Robin Hood’s Bay is 35 miles (56 km) from Middlesbrough, which is 3 hours from London by train.
