Bathe in autumn colours close to the Falling Foss waterfall

North York Moors, near Whitby, North Yorkshire

If ever there was a magical woodland walk, it’s the two-mile circular trail through the trees from May Beck to the charming Falling Foss waterfall, all within Little Beck Wood Nature Reserve.

It’s spectacular in the autumn when the enchanting woodland colours are at their best.

As well as seeing the 30-foot waterfall, a family walk through this forest park takes you to a bridge where you can play pooh-sticks and see a mysterious stone cave known as 'The Hermitage', once the secluded home of an 18th-century hermit. This historical chappy was happy foraging in the woods for food, fuel and shelter, but lucky visitors today have a far more enticing prospect – the Falling Foss Tea Garden located at the beautifully sited woodland cottage of Midge Hall. Think homemade cakes and pots of tea served at outdoor tables in a rustic glade – the words ‘dingly-dell’ were never so apt.
