Why not swap the usual hotel for this rather lovely stately home, and live like lords and ladies of the manor for the weekend?
You’ll have your ‘own’ team of chefs, waiting staff and butlers on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly, and plenty of time to explore the Capability Brown-designed gardens – without worrying that a bus-load of camera-wielding day visitors are going to turn up to admire the herbaceous borders. You may however, be joined for dinner by Lord and Lady Clifford – the current owners.
Don’t worry, it’s all very relaxed – they encourage everyone to treat the place as their own. Besides, it’s a great opportunity to find out about the fascinating history of the place. Tucked into a tranquil Devon valley, on the shores of a pretty lake, the house has been home to the Clifford family for over 400 years. Aside from walks in the peaceful grounds, there are fine paintings, priceless antiques and porcelain, and a rare family military uniform collection to explore in the house.
And when you’re done with all that, you’ve got Dartmoor National Park just down the road. Horse riding or mountain biking, anyone?
