Trip-trap along the Red Squirrel Trail

Newport, Isle of Wight

This family-friendly cycle and walking path encompasses an exciting trail of artwork, sculpture and trolls under bridges.

This trail runs from the outskirts of Newport (the Isle of Wight’s main town) to the quaint village of Merstone along the old railway track. Along the route, created in partnership with Gift to Nature, you will find a number of art installations, many of which are influenced by the wildlife from the surrounding areas.

Some of the sculptures and artwork are very subtle, so you will have to keep your eyes peeled to spot them all. The wildlife in the area is thriving thanks to the overall project, making for some delightful spots to sit down and picnic on some of the specially commissioned benches along the route.

Of course, the stars of the show for the kids visiting the trail are the trolls, who lurk here and there along the trail. Just remember to listen out for billy goats trip-trapping across the old railway bridges.
