Tour Test Valley to discover an inspiring literary heritage

Test Valley, Hampshire

From The Mayor of Casterbridge to a very special Tank Engine; travel through Test Valley and read between the lines.

Find yourself walking through the pages of novels, children’s books and comic cartoons. Writers down the centuries have borrowed from the inspiring downland and river landscapes of Test Valley’s beautiful country houses and colourful local characters.

Visit the locations where plots have been set. Agatha Christie, Geoffrey Chaucer, Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen all drew on Test Valley inspiration for their novels.

Pick up a guide to discover more, and you might find yourself wandering among the footsteps of H.G. Wells and Ian Fleming. For Hardy fans, a delightful mural can be found at The Weyhill Fair pub, named after what’s referred to as “the Greatest Fair in all the Land”. The Fair also played a part in Hardy’s novel, The Mayor of Casterbridge, as it is where the Mayor put his wife up for auction and sold her to a sailor.
