June events: Revel in pageantry at the Durham Regatta

River Wear, Durham

There's nothing weary about the Wear, as shown at northeast England's premier rowing event.

Few races can trace their history back almost 200 years. But in 1834, when a boat captained by County Durham's sheriff challenged the local University's rowers to a race to mark the Battle of Waterloo, it started a tradition that continues each year at the prestigious Durham Regatta, a festival of all things boating.

Set among the trees and historic spires of the old city, the regatta is a chance to revel in the mastery of boating. But it has also become a festival for land-lovers, too: classic car rallies, brass band music and other English pageantry accompanies the racing each year. And if the summer heat gets a little too much, there's no shortage of real ale on tap.

Durham Regatta 2019 takes place between 8-9 June; entry to the riverside Regatta enclosure costs £5 per adult and £2 per child.
