Rediscover England’s mining past at the Woodhorn Museum

Ashington, Northumberland

Journey through England’s 800 year coal mining history and experience what life was like for pitmen at Woodhorn Colliery.

Woodhorn Colliery was a working pit for over 80 years, and many of the remaining buildings still stand today to form a proud part of this fascinating museum.

There aren’t many subjects in England’s recent history more emotive than that of the miners, and at Woodhorn, many of the sights, sounds and stories of Woodhorn’s pitmen are laid bare as you pass through the interactive day-in-the-life exhibition of Coal Town. Meanwhile, outside in the stable block, you’ll still be able to smell the pit ponies who called this place home over the years, and back inside you can view the exclusive Ashington Group exhibition by the Pitmen Painters, who painted mining life onto canvas.
