Alfresco Shakespeare in Eastbourne’s pretty Italian Gardens

Eastbourne, East Sussex

Discover one of the South Coast’s best kept secrets, with hidden gardens, secluded walkways, outdoor Shakespeare and rock pooling.

Nestled at the foot of the dramatic cliffs of the South Downs National Park, Eastbourne’s Italian Gardens offer a peaceful setting for picnics, with stunning Italianate pergolas and shady cliff-side walks.

Wander down to Holywell beach for rock pooling at low tide in the Marine Conservation area, or walk along the beach for stunning views along Falling Sands which feature at the foot of Beachy Head – Britain’s highest chalk sea cliff.

A visit during July is a must, as the gardens become a natural amphitheatre for outdoor Shakespeare, using the stunning Italianate pergolas as a stage.

Hop on the seafront Dotto Train and arrive in with picnic in hand ready to enjoy a sunset performance of one of Shakespeare’s best.
