Do you believe in ghosts? You might do after experiencing the dark, eerie atmosphere of Oxford Castle unlocked.
Amidst Oxford’s majestic spires sits a huge, foreboding building that was feared and loathed for almost 1,000 years.
This is no fairytale castle, but one where murderers, thieves, jailers, hangmen and royalty have lived within its walls. It was used as a prison since 1071 and was only closed in 1996.
Costumed guides lead you through the centuries from St George’s Tower to the depths of the 900-year-old underground crypt.
You will hear about notorious figures such as Jack Ketch, the infamous public executioner, and Anne Green, who survived her own hanging in 1650.
You may even photograph a ghost without knowing it, as one recent visitor did. When Keiron Brown downloaded his photos onto his computer at home, he was astonished to see a dark, hooded figure facing him in the crypt.
Are you brave enough to face Oxford’s dark past?
